Improved treatment and clinical management of poverty-related diseases
The purpose of this Call for Proposals is to provide funding to projects that aim to evaluate new or significantly improved drugs or drug regimens in humans or to optimise the efficacy and use of existing therapeutics for any of the PRDs, including co-infections of PRDs. EDCTP: Strategic Actions supporting large-scale clinical trials
The purpose of this Call for Proposals is to support distinct strategic actions (clinical research activities) which are part of a large-scale clinical trial that has the potential to achieve rapid advances in the clinical development of new or improved medical interventions against PRDs. Such large-scale clinical trials are often expensive and may require clinical research in different countries or on different continents, including outside of Europe and Africa.

WHO-TDR Post graduate training support available
TDR supports 7 universities from low- and middle-income countries to provide PhD and Masters degrees focused on implementation research in malaria, TB and neglected tropical diseases to improve health in those regions. WHO/TDR - Call for Applications - To organise a workshop exploring the topic of surveillance of insecticide resistance and alternative methods of vector control
WHO/TDR are calling for collaborative applications from institutions working on the surveillance of insecticide resistance and the development of innovative methods of vector control for emerging arboviruses to organise a workshop exporing these issues with the aim of developing an international network on surveillance and vector control. One multi-country proposal will be selected and will receive funding for one year up to a maximum of US$ 200 000.

TDR Opportunity: New funding to increase capacity for Ebola outbreak research
A new call for proposals to increase research capacity is now available from the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), TDR and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC-UK).
The call is intended to support projects that will develop and strengthen research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa to conduct high quality health research during infectious disease emergencies such as the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa.
Funding covers capacity development at the regional, national, institutional or staff level, and supports activities such as training for clinical trials and operational or implementation research, generating evidence on how to introduce and test new tools or treatments during outbreaks of EVD or other emerging infectious diseases, as well as identifying and implementing best practices to build community and national health authority support and engagement.

The goal of this joint research programme is to promote collaboration between South African, African and British scientists. The call will focus on understanding Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa and will be partnered with GlaxoSmithKline and the South African Medical Research Council. The Call is specifically looking for proposals that target NCD’s of high prevalence in Africa. This partnership aims to invest £20 million in the Global Health Trials Partnership to generate new knowledge about interventions that will contribute to the improvement of health in low and middle income countries.

Data For Life Funding Opportunity
The Children's Prize has launched a new $100,000 prize called Data for Life. The Data for Life Prize invites applicants to submit a successful but under-recognized life-saving intervention for children under five that deserves more rigorous study.
Two winners will receive $50,000 each to fund meticulous, independent, year-long field studies of their chosen intervention. The results can then be used by winners to both improve the effectiveness of the intervention and to convincingly demonstrate the value of their work to potential donors and funding partners. TDR funds specific research projects in diseases of poverty, which cover infectious diseases and the culture and environment that contribute to these problems. Call for Health Research Regional Training Centre in WHO African Region
In line with health research needs identified with both the WHO African Regional Office for Africa and the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), this call is for identifying a regional training centre in the WHO African region ( list of countries is available athttp://www.afro.who.int/en/countries.html). Over a two-year time period, this centre should progressively integrate a panel of skill-building courses on implementation research, ethics, good practices, project planning, management and evaluation and results dissemination in their training programs. They will also be expected to offer a train-the-trainer programme to disseminate these courses among other institutions in the region, and to organise regular training programmes where other institutions and organizations can plan to send candidates for training.

Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships for Health Professionals
This scheme is intended for practising health professionals who wish to carry out research in any area within the remit of the Society and Ethics Programme, either full-time or part-time, while maintaining their work commitments. The research should address a real-life issue in the candidate’s professional practice that is relevant to the Programme. Part-time fellows will be expected to spend at least 50 per cent of their time on their research. This scheme can be used to enrol on a PhD for those who have little or no humanities or social science experience. The scheme can also be used to undertake postdoctoral research. It is particularly aimed at people who intend to pursue a long-term academic career exploring the ethical or social aspects of biomedical research or health interventions. NIH: Sub-Saharan African Collaborative HIV and Cancer Consortia
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote and facilitate research on HIV and cancer in Africa through collaborative efforts between investigators in United States (U.S.) and investigators in sub-Saharan African countries. The FOA solicits applications for Specialized Center Cooperative Agreements (U54) for research on HIV-associated cancers from research institutions in the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa. Each application is required to propose between two to four research projects that address high-priority questions relevant to the African country. The proposed projects may range, as appropriate, from basic research to translational efforts as well as population and implementation studies. Clinical trials, however, will not be supported. Grand Challenges India Accepting Applications
Achieving Healthy Growth through Agriculture and Nutrition, the first program launched through the Grand Challenges India partnership, is now accepting applications. This program joins others within the Grand Challenges family of grant programs supported by the Gates Foundation and its partners. It seeks a comprehensive set of approaches to 1) reduce the high incidence of low birth weight, early stunting, and wasting in Indian children less than 2 years of age and 2) prevent undernutrition in women of reproductive age and in children from 0-2 years of age. PAHO/TDR Call for Regional Small Grants Proposals for Prevention and control of maternal to child transmission of Chagas disease, hepatitis, syphilis and HIV
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Special Programme for Research and Control in Tropical diseases (TDR) invite health professionals and investigators from the Region to submit research proposals addressing operational issues related to health care access for pregnant women and children, and strategies to integrate diagnostic and treatment services for Chagas diseases, hepatitis, syphilis and HIV. 07/06/2013 MRC FUNDING: Joint Global Health Trials scheme – launch of fourth call for proposals
The UK Department for International Development, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust are pleased to jointly announce the launch of the fourth call for proposals under this initiative to fund global health trials.
DfID, MRC and the Wellcome Trust each have a strong history of supporting research that aims to improve health in low and middle income countries. The three partner agencies share the view that in order to have maximum impact on health we need to work together to provide evidence of the best, and most appropriate interventions. Pooling resources brings the necessary funds and experience together to achieve implementable results which address health problems affecting low and middle income countries. Together we will invest up to a total of £15 million for the fourth call to be launched under the joint global health trials partnership. The costs will be shared equally between the three funders.

Grand Challenges Explorations Round 10 grants announced:
Over 50 new grants of US$100,000 each will be made to investigators from 18 countries and mark the tenth round of funding from Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative seeking to lower the barriers for testing innovative ideas in global health and development. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is excited to announce the newly created Gates Fellows program. Fellows will work in close collaboration with foundation employees to support research, evaluation of strategic priorities, grant projects, and initiatives. Additionally, Fellows will have broad access to mentoring from world class leaders and opportunities to leverage the foundation¹s network. Applicants are required to have an advanced degree, such as MD, PhD, PharmD (scientific disciplines highly encouraged), or MBA with backgrounds in management consulting, investment banking, private equity or venture capital, and 7-10 years of related professional experience. Those that meet these qualifications and also have experience in global health or development are highly encouraged to apply.
