Rwanda Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG)

Experience

Projet San Francisco (PSF) in Kigali, Rwanda and the Zambia Emory HIV Research Project (ZEHRP) in Zambia together make up the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG). The RZHRG main office is located within Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Projet San Francisco (PSF) was founded by Dr. Susan Allen in 1986, and is the longest-standing HIV research organization in Rwanda. The Zambia Emory HIV Research Project (ZEHRP) was founded in 1994 by Dr. Susan Allen.

RZHRG has extensive experience conducting research on HIV epidemiology, structural, behavioral, and biomedical HIV prevention and treatment clinical trials. Since 2004, RZHRG has participated in multiple clinical research trials including Phase I, II and III trials of behavioral and biomedical prevention interventions.

Research interests

RZHRG has been a global leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS for more than 25 years, supporting Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing (CVCT) throughout sub-Saharan Africa. RZHRG is committed to supporting Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing (CVCT) as an effective and economical way to decrease HIV/AIDS transmission throughout southern Africa.

RZHRG is also involved with family planning research, with a focus on couples' family planning counseling (CPFC) and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods.

RZHRG also works to recruit HIV negative at-risk populations for trials and prevention interventions, including single women tested in antenatal clinics (ANCs) and followed through infant vaccination and family planning clinics; and female sex workers (FSW).

RZHRG also has experience with HIV vaccine trials. PSF has completed two phase 1 HIV vaccine trials, and a third phase 1 trial is ongoing. Our research site has used CVCT services as an entry point to recruit low-risk, healthy, HIV uninfected individuals in these trials.
